What is web site hosting?

The "hosting" of a web site means that a customer rents "space" on our web servers here at Southland Internet. To keep a web site accessible 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week, that website must be stored on a computer which is constantly connected to the Internet.  We give your web site a home and you maintain it remotely through FTP (File Transfer Protocol).

What is a domain name and how do I get one?

A domain name provides a custom Internet address for a group or organization.  For example, "southland.net" is the domain name for all basic accounts here at Southland Internet.  Anyone can register their own domain name through a registrar such as Register.com or Network Solutions.  It can be a personal address such as JohnDoe.com, or a business address such as your-business.com.   When you register for a domain name through a registrar, you'll need an Internet Service Provider to "host" that domain name on their network.   This will allow you to use it for your own website - www.your-name.com, and for email - you@your-name.com.
