RETURN HOME uploading using WS_FTP

Please read this entire document. It will familiarize you with WS_FTP and explain how to use the program to upload your webpages to our server.

WS_FTP provides a Session Properties window to automate the process of connecting and logging on to remote sites such as our web server. The Session Properties window is displayed upon startup. To create an FTP connection to a remote system, you can either enter the information to create a new session profile or invoke a previously saved session profile. Each session profile tells WS_FTP the name of the remote system, its platform or host type, and the required login account information - including User ID and password.

You will want to create a Session Profile for your web directory here at Southland Internet. To do this, simply click on the NEW button. Fill out the session information as shown below (substituting your own login name for "michelle"):

After you have entered the appropriate settings, click SAVE.

To connect to our web server, simply hit the OK button. You will then be logged into our system and you will see a screen similiar to the one below:

The WS_FTP main window displays the directories and files on your computer in the Local System list box (on the left) and the directories and files for the remote system (our webserver) in the Remote System list box (on the right). With both file systems displayed, users can easily locate files on one system and copy them to a directory on the other system. To do this, simply use the arrows in the middle of the window.

To upload (or send) a file from your computer to ours, use the arrow pointing RIGHT.

To download (or receive) a file from our system to your computer, use the arrow pointing LEFT.

A column of buttons just to the right of each list box enables you to browse both local and remote file systems. Each button represents a specific command that can be used to perform a particular directory or file operation. These include: change directory, make directory; view, execute, rename, or delete files; refresh directory information in list box; and display a snapshot of current directory information in a separate window.

When you are done uploading or downloading, you can disconnect by clicking on the CLOSE button and then click EXIT.

If you are experiencing difficulties with your WS_FTP program, please refer to their WS_FTP FAQs page.
