RETURN HOME uploading using Fetch

This page will familiarize you with Fetch and explain how to use the program to upload your web pages to our server.

Fetch is Macintosh FTP (file transfer protocol) client software developed at Dartmouth College which makes it easy to send/receive files to/from other computers on the Internet. Fetch can be obtained at the following address:
http://www.dartmouth.edu/pages/softdev/fetch.html

To Launch Fetch:
Double-click on the Fetch icon. If you do not get a dialogue box like the one shown below, click once on the button labeled Open Connection.

open connection

In the Host field:
Type the FTP address of our web server - ftp.southland.net

In the User ID field:
Enter your login name for Southland Internet. For example - if your email address is "elvis@southland.net" then your user ID will be elvis.

In the Password field:
Enter your Southland Internet password in all lowercase characters. As you type your password, it will not be displayed on the screen for security reasons.

In the Directory field:
This should be blank. If "/pub" appears, delete it.

Example:

fetch1.gif

When you have completed the previous steps, click on OK.

Fetch will then connect to the Southland Internet web server. You will be logged into your private web directory on our server. You will then get a dialogue box similar to the one shown below.

To Upload (send) your HTML documents to our web server:
Press the Put File button in the Fetch window. A standard Macintosh dialogue box will appear, asking you to select the file you wish to transfer. Browse through your Hard Drive to find the file you wish to upload. Click on it, then click OK. Fetch will proceed to transfer your file to our server, automatically.

Uploading Multiple Files:
To transfer multiple files, or folders in one shot, hold down the Option key while pressing the Put File button, or choose Put Folders and Files from the Remote menu.

To delete a file in your Southland web directory:
Choose Remote from the menu and then select Delete Directory or File.

To create a Shortcut:
You probably don't want to type in your host name, login name, and password every time you upload files. You can create a shortcut to do this work for you. Choose Customize from the menu and then select New Shortcut. You will see a dialogue box similar to the following:

shortcut

Name the shortcut something which will distinguish it as your Southland web page - example: My Web page or Southland Web page.

To use a shortcut, go to the File menu, choose Open Shortcut, and select the name you used for your Southland shortcut. You will automatically be connected to your Web directory on our server.

Cancelling and/or Quitting:
You may cancel any ongoing upload by pressing the Stop button. Sometimes the cancel command is not recognized and the current operation will therefore continue until it is completed. In that case you can close the connection (by closing the transfer window) or quitting from Fetch by choosing the Quit command from the File menu.

If you are experiencing problems connecting to our web server using Fetch, please feel free to call us at 714-441-3000 or send email to webmaster@southland.net.
