A mailing list is a group of users who share information on a common topic.  Mailing lists allow messages to be distributed to all of the list’s subscribers by submitting a message to a single address.  When a message is sent to the list address, it is forwarded to all subscribers of the list, who each receive a copy of the original message.

Mailing lists are similar to bulletin board services (BBS) and the Internet’s USENET newsgroups, except that they use the medium of e-mail.  A mailing list can be used for something as important as company-wide information distribution, or as trivial as a television sitcom fan club.

Mailing lists can be administered by one or more list owners, who are responsible for the operation of the list.  List owners can set a wide range of subscription and posting policies, and also have the option of moderating all messages submitted to the list.

Southland Internet offers two types of Mailing List services for individuals and businesses:

A Public/Private Discussion Mailing List - an Email-based discussion group or forum, similiar to live chat, but using email for the discussion medium.   Anyone wishing to communicate with the group sends their ideas to a private email address which in turn 'forwards' a copy of the mail to everyone on the list.  People can respondto your mail and vice versa. This can be a great way to meet folks from all over the world who share similiar interests, to solve problems, to discuss any topic at any time, as each list has a charter (or what the list's purpose or main topic is).  They are excellent for boards of directors, internal company communications, non-profit organizations, volunteer discussions, small circles of friends, and anything where the public is not invited or the list membership is controlled.

An Announcements List is a one-way list/communication where the list-owner sends a message to a private email address which in turns 'forwards' the email to everyone on the list (one by one).  The difference between this list and the Public Discussion List is that only the list owner can send out mail with an Announcement List.  Who uses Announcement Lists?  People/Businesses who want to send newsletters, new product release announcements, new technology releases or press releases, and/or anyone who has specific information to share with a small to large audience that wants to be notified and who have asked to receive your information as it becomes available.

Both list types can be administered by the list owner via email or through an easy-to-use, private web interface.

Mailing list prices start at $5.00 per month + a $10.00 setup fee.
